Chat Central - a people centred approach

From Bollywood dance to bowls, the Chat Central team run a varied programme

Chat Central always takes a person-centred approach. We take the time to discover what interests participants, what hobbies and skills they have and then we look for opportunities for them to get involved in their community.  Listening to what people want means we have a wide variety of activities on offer: from bowls to Bollywood dance; craft sessions to canoeing; tennis to Tai Chi and film clubs to photography. All with the aim of connecting people, reducing isolation and building confidence.

When participants first join Chat Central, a common comment is “I don’t know what I want to do”. The friendly, supportive environment that Chat Central provides, enables people to try new things.  For example, Chat Central recently visited, ‘Albany Sings’ led by the wonderful Katherine Fear, who hosts a weekly singing group for wellbeing.  It was a fantastic opportunity for our participants to try the group alongside others from Chat Central who had expressed an interest in singing.  A wonderful, uplifting time was had by all, and they all plan to return in the coming weeks.

Our ‘Try it Thursday’ sessions are varied, informative and fun.  We had an amazing turn out for ‘Dance Energise with Mandy’ - we shook pom poms and maracas and sang along to some great tunes. As always, participants took part at a pace that suited them, with seated options available.

In April we welcomed Warwickshire Wildlife Trust who made seed bombs and bird feeders with us.  Jen and Katie were able to talk about the Sherbourne Valley Project and the City Nature Challenge.  It also allowed our participants to learn about all the amazing volunteering roles and events that the Trust offer across the city.

Jane from Arboreal Seeds led our, ‘Mindfulness Made Easy’ session.  It enabled everyone to gain a better understanding of what mindfulness is and Jane gave us simple ideas that we could all introduce to our everyday lives including mindful eating, simple meditation and reminding us to use all our senses to appreciate the world around us.

Chat Central looks forward to welcoming anyone who might benefit from the chance to get out more, meet new people and try new things in a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment. We also welcome organisations to contact us if they would like to lead a ‘try it’ session or if they can provide a group volunteering opportunity.
