Social value starts with a conversation

Here at Voluntary Action Coventry we’re here to help bring people together to champion positive change through volunteering. It’s really easy for businesses to use ‘Get Involved Coventry’, VAC’s community engagement platform. You can use it to identify how you can do a good deed at an individual level or seek pro bono opportunities or even group volunteering sessions for the whole team.

Recently Sarah James, Social Impact Advisor, from the Warwickshire Highways contract at Balfour Beatty Living Places did just that. Via the platform, Sarah was connected to the Chat Central project to lend a hand on the monthly litter picking activity.

On a bright and sunny afternoon, armed with gloves, litter pickers and plenty of enthusiasm, the team set off for a rewarding session. Working alongside the Coventry North West Wombles, Coventry’s very own litter-busting champions, the group helped give local streets a much-needed spruce up. With shared laughter, great conversations and a real sense of community spirit, time was well spent.

Alongside a varied programme of activities, Chat Central organises litter picking sessions primarily as group volunteering activities for project participants, many of whom maybe new to the city or haven’t been out and about for a while. It’s a chance to bring together people to chat and connect, take a stroll through the city and clear litter along the way whilst doing something good for the city. We were delighted when Sarah reached out to join in the mission. Sarah said:

“Social value isn’t always about delivering large projects or events. Sometimes it’s about meaningful conversations, building connections and helping people develop their confidence and communication skills. I really enjoyed spending the afternoon litter picking in Coventry city centre, meeting members of Chat Central, encouraging conversations and getting to know people from a variety of backgrounds, all while enjoying the September sunshine.”
