One of Chat Central’s goals is to support participants in discovering new interests to boost wellbeing.
Responding to participants interests, Chat Central has recently started a monthly History meet up, welcoming Elizabeth Yardley (a highly valued volunteer with Historic Coventry Trust). The group also regularly visits heritage sites throughout the city, most recently the Watch Museum.
An inspirational volunteer shares her passion for history
Chat Central welcomed Elizabeth to their second Coventry History meet up at the Old Bluecoat School. Through her volunteer role with the Trust, Elizabeth shares her extensive knowledge of Charterhouse and London Road Cemetery giving tours and leading their Volunteers’ Choir. Elizabeth also has a passion for family history and shared stories of the discoveries she made whilst researching her family tree, uncovering information about her ancestors which she intertwined with Coventry’s history.

Pictured here, left: Elizabeth’s grandmother Lizzie and her parents, William Joseph, who was a watch jeweller and Elizabeth. Plus her youngest sister and three of Dad’s older siblings; and right: Elizabeth’s father pictured 5th from left shortly after their plane crashed in Germany near Recklinghausen in September 1941.

Elizabeth began by talking about her father and the role he played as a pilot with the RAF during World War II, sharing incredible photographs of him with his crew after their plane had been shot down (see above) and as a Prisoner of War, in costume ready for a show they were allowed to put on (pictured here).
As Elizabeth went back through the generations, we learned about her family who ran the Leopard Inn in Smithford St. and of watch case makers who lived and worked in Craven St. She found a description of one relative, John Yardley, as being a remarkable mechanic and a simple hearted, talented friend. “He was one who thought little of his own time where the spending of it would be the means of helping others.” It seems the apple hasn’t fallen too far from the tree!
Prior to this, Elizabeth found ancestors who worked in the cloth and weaving industries and discovered that Hilary Clinton is also a direct descendant of Richard Hodierne, Elizabeth’s 4x great grandfather. We were left to wonder if Hilary herself knows her Coventry connection.
But perhaps Elizabeth’s most successful ancestor was John Yardley, a clothier who became Mayor of Coventry in 1689/1690, during which time he met William of Orange. He was linked to many charities and was a churchwarden at St Michael’s and Holy Trinity. He also supported the funding of Bond’s Hospital and Bablake Boys amongst many others.
When discussing her role as a local historian and volunteer Elizabeth said, “I never envisioned this when I retired, but it has given me a new sense of purpose and is extremely fulfilling in so many ways.”
Coventry’s historical sites are greatly supported by volunteers like Elizabeth who share their time, passion and knowledge of sites including Coventry Cathedral, Charterhouse, the Blitz Museum, the Weaver’s House, the Police Museum and the Watch Museum.
The Watch Museum – Spon Street
The Watch Museum (open Tuesdays and Saturdays), is run solely by volunteers, many who have ancestors who worked in the watchmaking industry. The three converted cottages give a glimpse back in time and have a range of maps, photographs, tools and a large collection of pocket watches and clocks.
