At Improving Lives, our supported volunteering course, we’re seeing first-hand how volunteering and tailored support can transform confidence and open doors to new opportunities.
One participant who recently completed the course, shared with Jemma Paterson (Improving Lives Lead Officer – UKSPF) how the experience has impacted positively on them:
“I feel that when I first came … I was sad and unmotivated. During the course I started feeling more like myself again. It surely helped me build more confidence. Now at the end of it, I feel that I can action my goals. It’s just a matter of time. I’ll volunteer, improve my CV and be hired for a nice position. Thank you all a lot.”
Once the course has finished, the support doesn’t end there. Our engagement officers stay in touch with participants as they build on what they have learnt during their time with VAC. Officers continue to help them on their journey, with follow-up phonecalls, advice, and signposting.
The six-week course combines practical volunteering activities with one-to-one guidance, helping participants overcome barriers to volunteering or employment. Along the way, participants follow a varied programme of activities where they:
- Visit voluntary and community organisations across Coventry (our VCSE Alliance)
- Learn how volunteering can boost wellbeing and community connection
- Expand their network and develop skills
- Gain support in accessing Get Involved Coventry, VACs community engagement platform that matches people to the right opportunities
- Receive personalised advice on CVs, applications and interviews
Jemma, pictured above, at a course enrolment stall in Coventry city centre said:
“Our aim is clear here at Improving Lives – we help people to focus on their futures, to recognise their potential, and ultimately to feel confident in what they have to offer.”
