VSquad at The Challenge Awards

On Monday 11th August, VSquad attended an awards ceremony hosted by The Challenge. Over the last year VSquad and The Challenge have worked in partnership on several events including the Coventry Half Marathon, the Sainsbury's Bagpack and the cleanup of Swanswell Park. At the ceremony 7 of our young volunteers received a certificate acknowledging their hard work throughout the year. We also bid a fond farewell to Katy Massey, Senior Programme Manager at The Challenge who we have worked so closely with. It has been a pleasure working with you and we wish you all the best in the future!

 VSquad cleans up

On Tuesday 5th August, our young people were busy helping to tidy up one of the city's historic cemeteries.

They answered an appeal in the Coventry Telegraph asking for support to help clear the overgrown cemetery at St Nicholas Church in Radford. Six VSquad volunteers rolled up their sleeves and spent a couple of mornings during their summer holidays raking and clearing the cut grass at the cemetery.

Organiser Viv Phillips-Parham from St Nicholas Church said "the VSquad volunteers worked very hard and we were so pleased with the results. It makes such a difference having the extra help."

VSquad bagged it!

On Thursday 19th June, 8 of our young volunteers from VSquad went to Sainsburys in Courthouse Green in order to raise money for a local charity. The initial idea of a bagpack was brought forward by one of our VSquad team who wanted to raise money and awareness of Coventry Haven. Coventry Haven are a member of Women's Aid, which provides safe accommodation to women fleeing domestic violence throughout the UK and which campaigns nationally against domestic violence. After 2 hours of bagpacking on Thursday evening the team managed to raise over £130 for the local charity and were delighted with the success of the evening! Thank you to Sainsbury's, The Challenge, Coventry Haven and of course VSquad.

Voluntary Action Coventry has launched the VSquad. A team of young people from all backgrounds and areas of Coventry who engage in volunteering in order to make a difference in their community. This may be through 1-2-1 volunteering within existing organisations or as a team tackling issues important to them through action day based volunteering. The VSquad is being supported through grants made by Big Lottery Fund Awards for All and the National Express Foundation.

The project will be led by the team of young people from Coventry with support from the Volunteering Services team. They have the opportunity to decide what challenges or volunteering they would like to get involved in, whether it is a pop-up charity shop, clearing a local waterway, helping out at a local charity event or developing and painting a mural, the challenges will be diverse and fun. The team will support young people to design the project and may even be able to give them a small grant to get their project or action day off the ground.

As part of their volunteering they will have the chance to undertake either the ASDAN short course qualification or the Volunteering at an event certificate. This will offer members of the VSquad a formal certificate to take into a working environment.

The VSquad will be getting together once a month to discuss upcoming events or to shape the project. If you would like to sign up to hear more about the VSquad then please email volunteering@vacoventry.org.uk or contact Lucy or Becci on 024 7622 0381.

This project is funded through National Express Foundation and Awards for All England.
