Quality and Governance Project and vinvolved joint work to improve age diversity on governing boards

We are currently doing some focused work to get more young volunteers interested in governance work and to also get groups thinking a bit more proactively about getting their trustee recruitment policies more accessible and appealing to younger people. We are working with groups to broker a short term volunteering opportunity to review/update with a volunteer their trustee recruitment policies. We have quite a few volunteers interested in this type of opportunity and they have shown an initial commitment to offer up to 8 hours support over a four week period (some volunteers may be interested in supporting beyond this and ultimately decide to progress to a governance role)

If your group currently have board vacancies, or expect to have soon, then this opportunity may support your organisation to recruit new people to your board. As a minimum it will provide you with the opportunity to update your recruitment approach!

If this is an activity that you are interested in progressing further then please get in touch the Quality & Governance Project coordinator, Kate Harris 024 7622 0381 k.harris@vacoventry.org.uk.

Please note that the first stage would be for your group to consider an action plan for improvement which can be facilitated by Kate, the second stage would be for your group to meet with interested volunteers to develop this action plan and put in place some lasting improvements with their support. Again Kate with input from vinvolved would also facilitate this activity however clearly a time commitment from groups is needed to bring about improvements.

There is also a useful guide available from The National Council of Voluntary Child Care Organisations (NCVCCO) entitled ‘Governing for children: A beginner's guide to governance in the children, young people and families' voluntary sector. The guide aims to introduce and describe the key elements and essential role of those who govern small charitable organisations
