November 2020 Chat Central News

Hi Chat Central members, volunteers and friends,

As the leaves are now falling from the trees and we have gone back an hour, we are definitely heading towards the winter.  This year is, and continues to be, a tough one for many. Some of us may be feeling low as we think about the shorter days and less opportunities to meet up with friends and family or to be involved in activities as we have in the past.

Here at Chat Central we are always trying to find new things to keep up everyone’s spirits. We are making sure that we keep in touch with our colleagues around the city so that we know about all of the great things that you can get involved in.  Much is still online but organisations are gradually finding new ways to do “in person” activities safely.  Of course we don’t know if things will shut down again at some point but we are taking it week by week and are doing our best to keep on top of the guidance and information coming through.

We have decided that for November we will do two outdoor meet ups a week in the lower precinct. People really want to see each other in person and we can safely still meet there, even if the weather is bad.  We have to stick to groups of six (we can have two groups) and people need to wear a mask, use the hand sanitiser provided and observe social distancing guidelines. Regardless, we can and do still have a great time together and we hope you will join us.  If you would like to come along to our in person events, please let us know that you are coming so we can plan ahead.

We also have a new Chat Central Facebook Page

What are our on-line events?

  1. Drop-in coffee morning – a chance for anyone to come along for a general chat amongst friends. We often have guests from other organisations to tell you about other things that you can get involved with.  You can join this session via phone only if you want – don’t need internet access
  2. Culture Club – come along and talk about any TV, film, book, radio, music etc. that you are enjoying.  We may decide to watch something and discuss it, people may bring a short poem to share and discuss. You can join this session via phone only if you want – don’t need internet access.
  3. Art Club– Seyedeh shows us how to make various creative projects, using things that you have around the house – you can just watch or join in, relax and chat at the same time as learning new skills.
  4. Dancing – Seyedeh runs a very inclusive and enjoyable dance session with a mixture of Iranian/Arabic/Western/Bollywood tracks – open to all. You can use as much or as little energy as you like – we do want people to participate in this class rather than just watch, but you can turn off your video if you are uncomfortable being seen dancing.
  5. Chair Yoga – Neeta run this inclusive yoga session – is a lovely stretch for everyone – easy for those that need it and more challenging if you are more experienced. Make sure that you talk to Neeta if you have any physical conditions that need to be thought about.

All of our activities are run by volunteers who share their skills and time with. Please make sure that you take care of yourself and only join in with what you can manage and let the leader know if you have anything that might make it hard for you to participate.

Spotlight on our activities

Art Club

One of our lovely new participants came along to our art club and this is what she said - - Thanks to our fantastic Seyedeh, art club facilitator for making a warm, inviting and fun environment. This is her art work “I have only just started going to the art group but I absolutely love it. I have been made to feel so welcome and I feel that I have made lots of new friends. I was feeling quite lonely and at the moment I am housebound I really really love the zoom art thank you. I really look forward to it and look forward to seeing everyone. Sometimes I feel lonely and that Life is just about my medical needs and disabilities, I love that I can have fun and do something where I feel totally equal and included and with new friends and forget about all the reasons why I can’t go out. Afterwards I feel like I have been out somewhere and I have had a good giggle and smile and just feel happy. After art last week my smile muscles ached in my face..they haven’t for a while and that felt fab thank you” - Nat

Chair Yoga may be preferable for some people, for example: those who are older, who may find it difficult to get on a mat and for those who have conditions like myself such as fibromyalgia.

Chair Yoga is for all levels. Stretch and strengthen different muscles of the body sitting down as well as by standing and using the chair for support. Chair Yoga can help improve core strength, increase flexibility & promote mobility.
